Sharjah Healthy City program has been started since April 2012, to be registered in the WHO regional healthy city network, as part of the vision and efforts of His Highness Dr.Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Al Qassimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah , to put health at the top of the development agenda of the emirate. A letter of cooperation was signed between Ruler office and WHO aiming to create and improve the social and health environment in the city.
After 3 years of implementing the healthy city program, the authorities of Sharjah requested WHO to evaluate the program. According to WHO, if Sharjah reached 80% of the indicators in different domains like health development, community based engagements, education and literacy, skill development, water, sanitation and air, emergency preparedness etc. Sharjah has been awarded as the Health City with 88% score in the month of September 2015.
According to the WHO officials, Sharjah will also be a regional training center for other cities seeking an endorsement to join the program.
